ABOUT YOUR VISIT
Preparation for your appointment
-
Upon completion of your pre-booked session you will be sent confirmation of your appointment.

-
On the day, you will receive a consultation and assessment prior to the treatment taking place, usually lasting around 10-15 minutes. This is to gain an understanding of your current issue and also note any medical conditions you may have.

-
Once finished, the therapist will instruct which items of clothing need to be removed for the treatment and leave the room whilst you get ready. Clean towels will be provided to cover up areas which are exposed. Client privacy is a PRIORITY throughout the session.

-
After the treatment is complete, the therapist will again leave the room whilst you get ready and only re-enter once they are advised.

-
Some aftercare instructions will be provided before leaving the treatment room.
Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a therapy which has been used for over 2000 years in China to combat internal and external issues. It has recently made its way into the western countries and is now being used widely across Europe by medical professionals.

From a western point of view acupuncture is used with slightly different approach and at TMD we use it specifically for muscular and pain related problems. The insertion of the needles into precise locations around the problem area causes the body to respond by encouraging the muscle/nerves to relax and releasing pain suppressing hormones around the insertion site.
In some treatments we also include Electro-Therapy, this is where very small electric impulses are sent between 2 needles. These impulses can help block out and override nerve signals resulting in the decrease in pain levels.

Acupuncture is generally a pain free treatment. The needles used are very thin at only 0.25mm thick, roughly the same thickness as 2 strands of hair!
Acupuncture and Electro-Acupuncture can help with issues related to:

-
Muscular Pain.
-
Muscular Tension.
-
Upper/Lower Back Pain.
-
Joint Pain.
-
Sciatica.
-
Existing/Pre-existing Injury.
A typical acupuncture session will last either 60 or 90 minutes depending on the areas which are being treated. Treatments will generally include:
-
Massage to the area which is being treated to prepare for needling.
-
Insertion of needles.
-
TDP heat lamp applied over the needles.
-
Needles manipulated approx. every 10 minutes.
-
In some cases electro-stimulation can applied.
Massage

Massage is one of the most common forms of treatment used by therapists when treating muscular related issues. At TMD we use a wide range of unique skills comprised from Swedish and Sports/Deep Tissue techniques to help rectify these issues.

Simply put, it is the contraction of a muscle that creates movement. Repetitive movement especially under excess load can cause a state of permanent contraction within the muscle, often referred to as "tension". Tension can also occur from spending too much time in the same position for example, sat at a computer or long periods of driving.

When muscles become tense and contracted, often the nerves that supply them follow suit. Your body thinks this unnatural state of contraction is in fact natural and needs to be "reset". Massage is the perfect treatment for doing so as the applied pressure to the muscles forces them to release and revert back into a more natural position.
Sports / Deep Tissue massage can help with issues related to:

-
Muscular Tension.
-
Headaches/Migraines
-
Pre-existing Injury.
-
Stress.
-
Insomnia
Cupping
Following the history of acupuncture, cupping is traditionally a Chinese therapy which has made its way into western countries following its effectiveness towards muscular issues.

Cupping therapy has the opposite principle of massage in regards to pressure. Massage therapy is based around positive pressure which applied down to the muscles, whereas cupping therapy is based on a negative pressure pulling the muscles up.

Multiple suction cups are applied to the area of damage/tension which creates a vacuum effect. The skin and muscle is drawn upwards into the cup creating a negative pressure. This has a direct affect to anything below cup site.

As a result of the suction, stagnated blood and waste products like lactic acid which has accumulated within the area due to an old injury or mass tension is drawn upwards towards the surface of the skin. This allows and encourages fresh oxygenated bloodflow to replenish the area. Oxygenated blood is the essential ingredient as part of the healing process.
